What happened
On August 21, the research peptide vendor Kylo Peptides published a report called "The State of Research Peptides 2026," announced in a press release framed around what it calls a verification gap in the peptide market. The headline claim is one worth taking seriously on its own merits, separate from who's making it: a vial can carry a 99% purity label and still contain meaningfully less actual peptide than a researcher assumes.
Worth saying plainly, because the report doesn't linger on it: Kylo Peptides sells research peptides, and the report doubles as an argument for why its own certificates, which list both a purity number and a separate net content number, are the better standard. That doesn't make the underlying point wrong. It just means the report is a vendor's pitch, not independent evidence, and the two things researchers actually need, real numbers and a source with nothing to sell, live in the testing literature the report points toward rather than in the report itself.
What "purity" actually measures, and what it doesn't
Purity by high performance liquid chromatography, the HPLC number printed on most certificates of analysis, measures how clean the main peak is compared to everything else that shows up in that same test run. It's a real, meaningful number. It just isn't the same question as "how much actual peptide is in this vial." A vial can measure 99% pure by HPLC and still be a smaller fraction of its total weight than a buyer expects, because that test doesn't account for water content, leftover salts from synthesis, or the counter-ions that peptides carry after purification. Net peptide content, a separate measurement, is the number that answers the second question. Most certificates only report the first one.
What independent testing actually shows
The clearest illustration comes from a peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research in 2024, run by researchers at the University of Pécs in Hungary and the University of California, San Diego. The team made real test purchases of semaglutide from online sellers, every one of them labeled with a 99% purity claim, and sent the vials to an independent lab for testing. The measured purity came back between 7.7% and 14.37%. Not a rounding gap from the labeled number, a different number entirely.
That study looked at one compound sold outside the legitimate supply chain, so it isn't a claim about every research peptide vendor. But it's exactly the kind of check a purity label invites and rarely gets, and the size of the gap is the point: a printed percentage means very little without someone independent actually verifying it.
A broader, more informal version of the same pattern shows up in consumer lab testing. Finnrick, an independent testing service that lets buyers send in their own peptide vials, has run thousands of tests on consumer-submitted samples. Its co-founder told NBC4 Washington this summer that close to 30% of the vials the service has analyzed came back mislabeled, under or over the stated amount, or contaminated. That's testing data and reporting, not a peer-reviewed study, but it points the same direction as the more rigorous academic finding, which is the kind of pattern worth paying attention to.
What this means for you right now
If you're buying research-use peptides, a purity percentage on its own isn't proof of much. Look for a certificate that names the specific lot, names the testing lab, and reports net peptide content alongside the purity figure, not just the purity figure by itself. If a vendor only publishes the flattering number, that's information too. None of this means every vendor is misrepresenting its products, the researchers above tested a slice of the gray market, not all of it, but the label is a starting point for questions, not the end of them.
This is a different question from whether a certificate of analysis is genuine in the first place, which is what we covered in an earlier piece on how few vendors publish a lab-verifiable COA. The two problems compound. A certificate has to actually be real before its purity number means anything, and even a real certificate is only reporting one of the two numbers that actually matter.
What to watch next
Kylo's report is one vendor's argument for a stricter standard, not a regulation, and nothing changed this week about what any manufacturer is required to publish. The thing worth watching is whether more vendors start reporting net content voluntarily, since nothing currently requires it. We'll cover it if that shift actually happens.
