You've got a vendor's site open in one tab and a certificate of analysis open in the other. It has a lab's letterhead on it, a purity figure somewhere north of 99%, and a chart you couldn't read if you tried. It looks exactly like proof. And you have no idea whether it means anything, because nobody has ever shown you what a real one looks like next to one that isn't.
Here's the thirty seconds, in the order worth doing it. You aren't auditing a laboratory. You're checking three things a genuine document will have and a borrowed one usually won't.
What you're actually looking at
A certificate of analysis is a lab report on one specific batch of a compound. A batch is a single production run, so the certificate is a statement about the particular powder that run produced, and about nothing else. That's the whole idea, and it's why almost every real check comes back to whether the paperwork and the vial in your hand are describing the same thing.
It usually reports two things. Identity, meaning the compound is the one on the label. And purity, meaning how much of what's in the vial is that compound rather than leftovers from making it, given as a percentage.
Start with the name of the shop you're buying from
This is the check almost nobody teaches, and it's the one that catches the usual problem.
The failure you're most likely to meet isn't a forged document. It's a real certificate belonging to somebody else. A manufacturer's document, or another shop's, posted on a vendor's product page as though it were theirs. The lab is real, the testing happened, the numbers are true, and none of it describes what's about to arrive at your house.
So look for the name of the shop you're ordering from, somewhere on the document. If the vendor appears nowhere on it, you're looking at someone else's paperwork, and it isn't telling you anything about your vial. That's a question, not a verdict, and the next section but one covers how to ask it.
Then match the batch number to your vial
Your vial has a batch or lot number printed on it. That number should appear on the certificate.
If they don't match, the document is about a different production run. It might be an older batch, or a good one from six months ago standing in for the current stock. A certificate with no batch number at all is a general-purpose document, and a general-purpose document isn't telling you about the vial in your hand.
Some vendors publish the certificate before you order and some include it in the box. Both are fine. If you're checking before you buy, you won't have a vial to compare against yet, so this becomes the check you run when the package arrives.
Then see whether it resolves at the lab
A picture of a certificate is not a certificate. The document should lead back to the laboratory that issued it, and there are usually three ways in. A QR code on the certificate. A lookup or verification page on the lab's own website, where you enter the batch number. Or an email address on the document that belongs to the lab rather than to the vendor.
Any one of those is enough. If the only place that certificate exists is an image file on the vendor's own site, with no route back to the lab, then what you have is a claim rather than a test result.
What it doesn't tell you
A certificate covers identity and purity. It doesn't tell you whether the vial was stored properly after testing, whether it was shipped in summer heat, or how the compound was handled between the lab and your door.
It also isn't the same thing as the phrase "third-party tested" on a product page. That's a claim about testing. The certificate is the testing. When a vendor makes the claim and won't produce the document, the claim is the only thing you have.
When one of the three doesn't hold
You ask. That's genuinely it, and it's a more useful move than it sounds.
Email the vendor and ask for the certificate matching your batch number, or ask why their name isn't on the one they've posted. A vendor running a real operation answers that in a day, often with the document attached, sometimes with a straightforward explanation about a manufacturer's certificate they hadn't thought to label. A vendor who can't answer it, or who treats it as an odd thing to want, has told you something useful for the price of one email.
Not finding a certificate at all is the same shape of thing. It's a reason to ask before it's a reason to walk.
What nobody can promise you
These three checks tell you the paperwork is coherent. They can't tell you the powder matches the paperwork, because the only thing that could is testing your own vial, and almost nobody does that.
What you're doing is narrowing the field, not eliminating risk. A vendor whose certificates name them, match their batches and resolve at the lab is a vendor who has built the boring infrastructure of doing this properly, and that correlates with the rest of the operation being run the same way. That's a good reason to buy from them. It isn't a guarantee, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
